Monument status for Mahabs temple

The Archaeological Survey of India proposes to notify the ancient Sthalasayana Perumal temple, Mahabalipuram, as a monument of national importance under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.

Dating back to the Pallava period (14th century), this temple, one of the 108 Divya Desams of Vaishnavism, is under the state HR & CE department. It has two major shrines for Lord Sthalasayana Perumal (Lord Vishnu) and Goddess Nilamangai Thayar. There is also a shrine for the second Azhwar — Boothathazhwar — who was born in this coastal town.

As per a legend, when sage Pundareeka wanted to offer a garland of lotus flowers to Lord Vishnu at this spot, he heard an oracle asking him to offer the garland to Him in Thirupaarkadal. Ready with the garland, he started baling out the seawater with his hands.

Pleased with his devotion, the Lord appeared as a Brahmin and offered to bale out the water and asked the sage to bring some food. On returning, the sage saw the sea completely drained and Lord Vishnu reclining with the lotus garland adorning Him. The Lord granted the sage’s prayer that all His devotees see Him in that posture.
