MTC conductors under GPS scanner

Soon conductors of 3,500 MTC buses would be brought under GPS radar with the state government planning to fit GPS equipment in the hand-held ticket-issuing devices (e-ticketing) to be issued to them, enabling officials to keep an eye on the movement of the buses as well as conductors.
MTC has decided to scrap the GPS that had been fitted in 500 buses, which facilitates commuters waiting at bus stops to see the arrival time of next bus on the electronic display boards.
However, officials said that the facility would be included in the proposed scheme as well.
“The pilot project will be based on the Ahmedabad model, where the e-ticketing facility has been launched recently.
The existing GPS scheme in MTC buses would be phased out, after the introduction of this new facility,” sources in the government told Deccan Chronicle on Monday.
“Conductors would be provided with hand-held ticketing devices fitted with GPS device, which would enable MTC officials to monitor the collection details as every ticket sold would be automatically updated in the servers,” sources said
The server was with the Ashok Leyland Company and the sub servers were installed in the MTC office for the existing scheme, they said.
“It has not yet been decided where to position the main server,” said the sources.
The existing GPS system in MTC buses would be phased out, but the possibility of synchronising the GPS-fitted equipment with display boards at the bus stops would be worked out, they said.
