New CoP scraps old zonal intelligence apparatus
City’s new CoP, S. George, has decided to scrap the zonal intelligence set-up and merge it with the existing centralised system under one joint commissioner. This is part of his effort to strengthen the intelligence gathering mechanism to prevent crime and ensure law and order.
In police circles it is being said that despite having two intelligence gathering branches, the former commissioner had failed to predict the recent spurt of violent demonstrations by Muslim outfits targeting US consulate general in the city.
“Now the intelligence apparatus has been put under one umbrella. Only a few months back the former city police commissioner J.K. Tripathy had decided to give his joint commissioners a separate set-up for intelligence gathering thinking it would help the city police function better. It looked like the it never functioned that way,” a senior police officer noted.
The former commissioner was of the view that his joint commissioners should have their own intelligence apparatus to keep them updated on developments in each police station.
As soon as George took over he decided to reorganise the intelligence gathering. “Every zone will now have one assistant commissioner each for intelligence but they will be reporting to the joint commissioner (intelligence) and not to zonal joint commissioner, (law and order),” an officer said.
Other assistant commissioners who remain in the intelligence section are now given specific work and wings with a well defined job profile.
It looks like the new commissioner is not interested in seeing people duplicating work.
