Nod for rural tourism in 4 Tamil Nadu villages

The coastal village of Devipattinam also known as Navabashanam with a temple dedicated to Devi, Theerthamalai – rife with spring and temples, Vadanemmeli where the crocodile bank is situated, and Tirupudaimaruthur, with its ancient temples, would soon figure in the rural tourism map of Tamil Nadu.

Apart from giving its nod to develop these villages, the Union tourism ministry has sanctioned funds.

These picture perfect rustic spots fall in Ramanathapuram, Dharmapuri, Kancheepuram and Tirunelveli districts in the state. Sources in the tourism department told this correspondent that the Centre has sanctioned funds to take up infrastructure work at the four villages, particularly in improving connectivity and amenities.

“These villages are ideal destinations to enjoy the rural life, savour rural cuisine, see culture and tradition, exploring nature, trekking and visiting temples,” an official said. This will allure more domestic and foreign tourists to Tamil Nadu, he added.

The Navabashana Navagrahas installed in the midst of the calm sea by Lord Rama are known for ensuring bliss for devotees. As this is the place where Lord Rama was relieved of the planet Saturn’s effects, and blessed by Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathi here, the God here is known as Thilakeswarar and the Goddess Soundaryanayaki. A visit to this holy soil of Sethu would relieve the devotee of all his sins. Devipattinam is located 77 km from Rameswaram.

Located in Dharmapuri, Theerthamalai as the name indicates is sacred land containing theerthams or springs and temples. It is said Lord Ram worshiped Lord Siva in two places during his incarnation – the first being Rameswaram and the other Theerthamalai.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
