Olive ridley, sea eagle rescued
It was a rescue and rehabilitation day for two critically endangered animals which depend on the marine eco system of the Chennai coastline.
An Olive Ridley Turtle named Sagarika and another hapless massive bird — sea eagle —were rescued.
While the turtle was rescued on May 18, with its flipper cut, the reptile was under treatment and was fed by the volunteers of Tree Foundation.
“The turtle has recovered and is free from internal injuries and has gained five kg of weight during the transit stay”, said Ms S. Supraja Dharini, chairperson, Tree Foundation.
At a function held in Neelnakarai, the turtle was taken three kilometres down the coastal waters and was released into the deep sea, she added.
The second rescue was by Blue Cross of India. Following a phone call Blue Cross members along with the general manager rescued the sea eagle that had strayed into a residential colony near Besant Nagar.
