OPS takes dig at DMDK over loss

There were some lighter moments in the Assembly over the performance of the DMDK in the Sankarankoil Assembly by-elections after the party claimed that it had garnered about 12,000 votes.

“Did you really get 12,000 votes? And does that include 10,000 votes of Marxists,” finance minister O. Panneerselvam asked ridiculing deputy leader of the Opposition Panruti S. Ramachandran. “The truth is, people have rejected you and made you lose even the deposit,” Mr Panneerselvam said amidst thumping of tables by the Treasury Benches on Wednesday.

Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa was amused by the repartee between Mr Panneerselvam and Mr Ramachandran who insisted that his party had people’s backing. DMDK leader remarked that his party obtained votes without any expectations.

“It is common for a small wave to be swallowed by a huge wave. It is not fair to criticise the DMDK over Sankarankoil bypoll results,” he said. “Asking for reduction in bus fares and pointing out lapses of the ruling party is the duty of the Opposition parties,” Mr Ramachandran said.

During the debate, Mr Panneerselvam referred to a remark by DMDK founder Vijayakanth during his campaign in Sankarankoil. The DMDK legislators spontaneously protested. Speaker D. Jayakumar, however, expunged the remarks after the chief minister intervened.

Mr Ramachandran reiterated that it was the duty of the Opposition to demand a rollback of prices. “The Opposition has its say and the government has its way,” he said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.
