Pay more for water at Koyambedu

While one litre of mineral water costs Rs 16 in the open market, in the shops at the Koyambedu bus terminus, it sells at Rs 20. Though the MRP of soft drinks is mentioned as Rs 28 on the bottles, they are sold for Rs 35. Several eatables are also priced above MRP.

Thanks to the laxity of the weights and measurements department, no routine checks take place here to enforce the right price. At best, inspection is minimal.

Retailers here work in collusion, infringing upon the rights of hapless passengers. “This is a case of flagrant violation of consumer rights.

I had to haggle for every product being sold here,” said Ms A. Geetha, a commuter. She said when questioned, a shopkeeper told her to leave the shop if she was not willing to buy.

The sprawling 37 acre terminus has virtually no boards providing information regarding where to file complaints. One rusted board was seen near a public toilet, placed in such a way that it did not serve any purpose.

“We don’t know where to go and register our complaints; these retailers are looting people every day. A permanent inspection booth or routine checks will help check this menace,” said Mr Peer Mohideen, a commuter.

When enquired about the situation, officers of CMDA, which manages the bus terminus, said, “We are planning to place new boards displaying the numbers for filing complaints with the consumer department. We also warn shop keepers repeatedly.

The responsibility, however, lies with the consumer affairs and labour department,” said junior engineer R.R. Chellappa. For complaints regarding consumer grievances one can call 28592828, 24321438, and 24940687.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
