Petrol bunks gear up for strike

As many as 3,600 petrol pump operators in Tamil Nadu will resort to ‘stop fuel purchase’ protest on October 1 and October 2 in line with the nationwide protest pressing for higher commission and have threatened to restrict fuel sales at pumps from October 16, if the government does not heed to their demands.

Tamil Nadu petroleum dealers association vice president K.P. Murali told Deccan Chronicle that they would prolong their protest until the Union petroleum ministry agrees to implement the Apoorva Chandra committee’s recommendations submitted to the government two years ago.

“As of now, the oil marketing companies pay us Rs 1.49 towards the commission for sale of 1 litre petrol and 89 paise for diesel.

“We want the oil companies to increase the dealers commission to `1.61 for petrol and 94 paise for diesel as recommended by the Apoorva Chandra committee that was constituted by the union
government,” said Murali.

As regards to restricting sales of fuel at pumps he said the timings would differ from place to place. “We will not sell fuel during lean hours in order to cut the additional costs.

Usually pumps on highways are busy during nights while pumps at other places are busy during day time.”
