PM to look into Jaya's Kudankulam demand
Union Minister of state for Parliamentary affairs V. Narayanasamy has expressed confidence that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would positively consider chief minister J. Jayalalithaa’s demand for giving the entire 2,000 MW of power generated at Koodankulam nuclear power plant to the state in view of the severe power shortage.
“The Prime Minister is aware of the power crisis in Tamil Nadu and will definitely take a good decision on chief minister’s demand,” he said talking to journalists at the airport on Monday. The Congress leaders of the state have also supported the demand, he said.
He said the 1,000 MW first unit would start generating power in two months and two months later, the second unit of 1,000 MW, would start generation.
Citing severe power shortage, Ms Jayalalithaa wrote to the Prime Minister on Saturday, demanding that entire 2,000 MW of power to be generated in the two units be given to the state instead of 925 MW from the two units.
Asked whether the Centre would intervene and help Tamil Nadu to resolve its inter-state water disputes with Kerala and Karnataka, Mr Narayanasamy suggested states should resolve the inter-state disputes on their own by holding dialogues.
Replying to a question, he said the Centre would decide on the action to be taken against S. P. Udayakumar, convenor of PMANE, for allegedly receiving foreign money to sustain the agitation against the Koodankulam nuclear plant. “The Union home ministry is enquiring into the charge and we demand stern action against him,” he said. On reports that the Congress proposed to field finance minister Pranab Mukherjee as Presidential candidate, he said there was still time for elections and the candidate would be selected after reaching a consensus with UPA partners.
