Property tax valuation hit in expanded Chennai
Bureaucracy and chaos over tax slabs have delayed property tax assessment in Ambattur and Maduravoyal areas.
According to corporation sources, the top brass of the city corporation recently warned revenue inspectors and assessors of stern action if they were found to be under-assessing the properties newly built.
Fearing that any wrong calculations in areas recently merged with the city corporation would land them in a soup, revenue officials delay the procedures and the property owners are now making a beeline to local ward councillors seeking their intervention.
Further, lack of adequate revenue staff in a few areas has also resulted in piling up of tax assessment applications.
“Tax assessments are delayed in Ambattur and its neighbourhoods as field officials are reluctant to fix and finalise the tax schedule.
The local revenue authorities lack clarity and there has been complaints from Ambattur area,” said Mr Saidai Ravi, former Opposition floor leader of the city corporation.
When contacted, a senior corporation official said that the backlog was due to the merger of the city corporation.
The issue has been sorted out and recently 125 new assessments were completed from peripheral areas.
All applications will be processed as per the guideline calculations and the public need not worry, the top official added.
