Public health department to issue notices to private clinics
The Public Health Department of the Chennai Corporation is planning to issue show-cause notices to private clinics and hospitals that fail to notify swine flu cases with the civic body.
“Most epidemics can be easily dealt when private medical practitioners co-operate with the government machinery, there is no need to panic over swine flu,” Corporation Health Officer Dr P. Kuganantham said.
It is mandatory for the private medical practitioners to notify the incidence of epidemic diseases, but most of them do not notify the corporation.
Under the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act, medical institutions that fail to notify flu cases can be penalised.
If the civic body is informed, preventive measures can be taken and the outbreak can be curtailed, the official said, adding that the situation in Chennai was not alarming.
Meanwhile, two more persons in the state were diagnosed with swine flu on Thursday. A 34-year-old man from Kolathur in Chennai and a 3-year-old boy in Erode tested positive of the A(H1N1) virus and are undergoing treatment at private hospitals.
With this, the number of cases in the state has gone up to 41 with 21 in Chen-nai.
