Quality of TN applicants very high, says OZ envoy
“Candidates from Tamil Nadu constitute six per cent of the top 10 Indian Ph.D scholars who were awarded scholarships under the Victoria India Doctoral Scholarships (VIDS) programme to pursue PhD in Victorian universities in 2012,” Geoffrey Conaghan, Victoria’s commissioner to India, told reporters at the launch of the second year of VIDS programme here in Chennai on Friday.
Addressing the media, Goeffrey said, “The quality of applicants from Tamil Nadu was remarkable during the first round.
We want India’s best research scholars and so we offer the most lucrative scholarships currently available in India, which is a big market.”
Launching the prestigious programme through video conferencing mode, Louise Asher, Victorian minister for Innovation, services and small business, said, “The scholarships will contribute to global knowledge and build a closer partnership between India and Australia.”
The state government of Victoria will award scholarships worth 90, 000 Australian dollars to 10 top Indian research scholars each.
Recipients will additionally have their fee waived by approximately 90, 000 AU dollars each for a period of three years at one of the nine universities in Victoria, Australia, for the academic year 2013.
