Raids on houses of Veerapandi, kin
Directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption (DVAC) sleuths on Thursday raided 16 premises in Chennai and Salem belonging to former DMK minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam, his relatives and aides in connection with amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income.
DVAC personnel raided the residences of Arumugam, the Salem strong man of DMK, his son Raja and others after it filed a case charging him with amassing over Rs 2.88 crore during his tenure as agriculture minister in the previous DMK regime, a press release from DVAC said.
“As an essential part of investigation, searches are being conducted today at 16 places,” the press release said. Arumugam is already facing a landgrab case against him.
DVAC officials also raided the houses of Nedunchezhian, the late son of the former minister, besides premises belonging to his political PA. Educational institutes run by the VSA Group also came under DVAC scanner.
Sleuths also raided the house of Arumugam’s son-in-law D.N.V. Mathivanan in Dharmapuri. The probe team led by DVAC DSP S. Ramachandaran arrived at Mathivanan’s house at Appavo Nagar in Dharmapuri town and grilled the inmates.
Meanwhile, Veerapandi S. Arumugam said, “The raids were part of the government’s vindictive action against DMK leaders. I have not accumulated wealth disproportionate to my known sources of income. I will face it legally.”
