Rail fracture at Paranur delays trains
Several Express trains from southern TN and few EMUs on the Tambaram-Chengalpet route were delayed by over an hour early on Thursday morning following a rail line fracture between Paranur and Singaperumalkoil.
An alert loco pilot of the Chennai-Mangalore Express noticed the fracture and alerted railway authorities and all trains were stopped on the route, thus averting a mishap.
According to railway sources, the loco pilot of the Chennai-Mangalore Express heard an unusual sound between Paranur and Singaperumal Koil at around 4.05 am.
He stopped the train and inspected the tracks. To his surprise, he noticed a fracture in the rail and alerted officials immediately. Subsequently, all trains were stopped on the route.
Karikal-Chennai Express, Rockfort Express from Trichy, Pandian Express from Madurai, Rameswaram Express, Nellai Express from Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari Express were among the express trains stopped midway due to the rail fracture.
Gang parties from Tambaram and Chengalpet arrived and temporarily repaired the fractured rail. Traffic was finally opened on the route and trains were allowed to cross the repaired spot at a speed of 10 km around 5.15 am. Normalcy was restored after 2 pm.
Engine breakdown delays trains:
In another incident, two express trains from southern TN were delayed after the engine of the Egmore-bound Chendur Express broke down midway between Othikvakkam and Chengalpet at around 10.05 am.
Despite repeated attempts, the loco pilot could not get the engine to start and Chengalpet officials too could not do much as there were no engines available.
Finally, a goods train from Tambaram was stopped and its engine was attached to the express train which reached Egmore an hour and a half late.
The Pallavan Express from Trichy was also delayed owing to the engine break down. The departure of the Vaigai Express from Egmore was delayed by 30 minutes as the rack of the Pallavan Express was to be used for it.
