Residents demand flyover completion

With congestion becoming the order of the day, the traffic flow from the commercial hub T Nagar is adding to the existing bottlenecks in Rangarajapuram.

The residents demand early completion of the Rangarajapuram flyover and removal of piled up garbage.

The situation was better when the corporation was cleaning the ward, said the residents, adding that the privatisation of waste management has made matters worse.

The corporation promised a subway for pedestrians and two wheelers under the Rangarajapuram flyover but now the corporation has put the plan on hold and just a pedestrian pathway is coming up below the bridge, lamented Kannan, a resident of Parangusupuram street.

The delay in the bridge work has made the location a hub for anti-socials and the civic body should inaugurate the bridge with the subway, facilitating movement of two-wheelers, said Meenakshi Ramchandran, a resident of the area.

The civic body is estimated to have spent close to Rs 24 crore for the Rangarajapuram flyover and steps should be taken to ensure that the bridge is put to optimal use.

Rangarajapuram was once a silent residential locality but now congestion and poor sanitation haunts the locality, rued R Govindaraj, joint general secretary, Exnora International.

Residents of Rangarajapuram and West Mambalam said traffic in the area could flow smoothly only when the flyover is completed.

Station View Road, on which one arm of the flyover lands from the North Usman Road side, has two-way traffic and when vehicles are parked on the sides, residents say they are unable to even cross the road during peak hours.

“Ours is a residential area and during peak hours traffic is unimaginable. Piled up garbage is another headache in our ward,” rued K. Sujatha of Rangarajapuram.

“Several representations have come from the public seeking provision of two wheeler movements through the small subway.

The representations have been forwarded to the Ripon Buildings seeking their intervention”, said N. Manohar, zonal officer, Kodambakkam.

Senior corporation officials assured that steps would be taken to improve sanitation in the locality.
