Residents demand quality road

Ayanavaran, once a calm residential locality, is now turning into a “ghost town” where civic woes go unchecked.

For instance, residents of Parasuraman Easwaran koil West Mada Street, which serves as a link between Konnur High Road and New Avadi Road, have been deprived of a quality road for over four months now. The situation is the same for almost all interior roads in the ward, complain civic activists.

“The northern part of the street was dug up by the Metro Water department to lay drinking water pipes a few months ago.

The department, however, ended up damaging the sewage pipes of several houses thus resulting in a delay in completion of the work.

Now much to the dismay of the locals, Metro Water is planning to dig up the road once again to lay another pipe,” said Mr Miya Jaan, a social worker residing in Ayanavaram.

Residents further complain that the drinking water supplied by Metro Water is unfit to be consumed as sewage frequently mixes with piped water due to leakages.

“Moreover, the storm water drain in the area has been defunct for years; it gets clogged often owing to the presence of illicit sewer connections,” said Mr K. Ramadoss, president of Ayanavaram Exnora Innovators club.

“The stretch is un-motorable as the street is now filled with gravel. Senior citizens find it difficult to walk. Lack of co-ordination between the City Corporation and Metro Water has made matters worse for residents,” he alleged.

Another major problem faced by the residents of ward 97 is the presence of a dumping yard at Vellalar Street.

The vacant land belongs to the Corporation and residents complain that the stench emanating from the site affects the health of children studying in the adjoining corporation school.

When contacted, a senior corporation official said, “We will instruct conservancy workers not to dump garbage near the corporation school.

” Regarding re-laying roads in the ward, he said, “Once the drinking water pipes are laid by Metro Water, we will lay new roads and pavements.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
