Rs 450 cr tourism projects take off

In a move aimed at improving infrastructure in a big way with generous funding by Asian Development Bank, the state government on Wednesday gave its nod for establishing a Project Management Unit here and a Project Implementation Unit at Poompuhar in Nagapattinam district to ensure the implementation of East Coast Circuit and Southern Circuit in the state.

The two circuits: East Coast Circuit (pilgrimage and heritage circuit) covering Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Thanjavur districts and Southern Circuit (pilgrimage and eco-circuit) covering Pudukottai, Sivagangai, Madurai, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts, will be implemented over five years period with a total outlay of Rs 450 crore. The project will ensure enhanced tourist arrivals through quality infrastructure.

In the first phase, the East Coast Circuit will be executed and the Southern Circuit will be taken up subsequently.

This would also ensure incidental services at existing and emerging tourist destinations and gateways; improved connectivity, enhanced quality of natural and cultural tourist attractions to ensure convenience and safety for visitors and greater participation by local communities in tourism-related economic and livelihood activities. Besides it will promote private sector participation and small businesses.

As per the instructions of chief minister J. Jayalalithaa, tourism minister S. Gokula Indira chaired the first meeting of state-level steering committee on ADB-aided tourism projects for TN at the secretariat here on Wednesday.

Ms Gokula Indira and chief secretary Debendranath Sarangi told the officials to commence the project at once.

According to the minister, project management consultant, design and supervision consultant for the project will be appointed soon.

The chief minister had already ordered officials to take steps to preserve natural and cultural heritage.
