Sanitary workers’ salary delayed
Temporary sanitary workers of Palavakkam area, which was recently merged with the Chennai corporation, complain that their salaries were not reaching them on time from the civic body.
Playing a good samaritan, a local DMK councillor is now providing advance payments for the civic workers and is collecting them back once the salary is credited.
According to local councillor T. Viswanathan, the corporation, which faces shortage of staff for waste management, engages 20 temporary workers along with regular civic workers to clear the garbage in the locality.
On April 13, the temporary workers had complained that their monthly salary was delayed from the Perungudi zonal office. Zonal officers explained that due to public holidays and paper works the payments got delayed.
To ensure that the workers returned to duty during Tamil New Year and also cleaned the area, I distributed a sum of Rs 70,000 towards salary and later obtained it from the local corporation office on April 26.
