Second phase of tree census begins in chennai
The state forest department on Wednesday kickstarted the second phase of tree census in Chennai at the Theosophical society, Besant Nagar.
State planning commission vice chairperson Shantha Sheela Nair inaugurated the drive.
The tree census, a first of its kind initiative in Chennai on completion would have covered trees from Tambaram to Avadi.
According to professor D. Narasimhan, associate professor, department of plant biology, Madras Christian College who is coordinating the census, a field guide to identify 50 common trees in Chennai has been released and is provided to the volunteers.
“Under the first phase, trees in and around Guindy were covered and so far about 22,000 trees have been enumerated in which around 17,000 trees were identified in the Guindy National Park,” he said
.
In Theosophical society about 50 college students participated and the census would take at least six months for completion.
