Semmencherry feels neglected
Bad roads, overflowing sewage, waterlogging, burning of garbage and poor healthcare facilities are some of the long-standing issues plaguing the residents of Semmencherry, an area recently merged with Chennai corporation.
“There is no dump yard in the area, so conservancy workers have been dumping garbage near the graveyard.
Often, the waste is set on fire, causing pollution. My children have developed respiratory problems owing to the smoke that emanates from this makeshift dump yard,” said Mr Ezhumalai, a resident of Semmencherry.
“Sewage flows across the streets. Most settlements built by Tamil Nadu slum clearance board (TNSCB) don’t have drainage connection.
The sewage attracts mosquitoes and flies, as a result of which the children playing on the streets tend to contract diseases such as malaria,” charged Mr S. Kumaran a tsunami victim who lives in a 158 square feet cement room allotted by the TNSCB in Semmencherry.
“In the event of an emergency, there is only a primary health care centre in the vicinity, which remains closed most of the time. Moreover, the PHC faces staff shortage,” he added.
