Skies may open up again next week

With a trough of low pressure formed over Andaman, Tamil Nadu might get rains from next week. “The dry spell will continue till Sunday.

The movement of low pressure will then decide on the extent of rains from next week," said Area Cyclone Warning Centre director Dr S. R. Ramanan.

He added that as per the numerical predictions northeast monsoon might pick up by October 29.

“We had subdued rains on Thursday. Tamil Nadu received only light rainfall. The state registered an average of 1.2 mm compared to the normal 6.4 mm," said Dr Y. E. A. Raj, deputy director general of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai. He added that the further course of rain this month would depend on the development of trough of low pressure in the Bay of Bengal.

On Thursday, for a 24-hours period ending 8.30 am, Chengam in Tiruvannamalai district, recorded the highest rainfall of 3 cm in Tamil Nadu followed by Colachel in Kanyakumari district, Nungambakkam and Anna University in Chennai with 2 cm each.

The state has so far received 55 per cent excess rainfall at 224.4 mm compared to normal rainfall of 145.2 mm.
