Smooth traffic flow in the city soon
Chennai traffic police will soon put in place a world-class system that will ensure smooth flow of vehicles and foolproof evidence against rule-breakers.
The Rs 150-crore project will link a central command centre located at the headquarters to a network of 100 road intersections and 67 police stations.
Cops will hand chalans to offenders with photo evidence gathered through high-resolution cameras. What’s more! Fines could be paid by credit card.
“The government has given the green signal. The system will be in place in six months,” said Sanjay Arora, additional commissioner (traffic).
He said the existing traffic management system would be seamlessly integrated into the new project to make detection of traffic violations foolproof and flow of emergency vehicles and VVIP convoys easy.
The central command centre will have an LED video wall getting live feed from surveillance cameras that can pick up even vehicle number plates.
Also, cops would be able to use the public address system at junctions to advise road users about traffic flow and handle crisis situations. The junctions will also have call boxes for citizens to report emergencies.
