Chennai mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy has directed the corporation officials to go for solar lights in all corporation-run schools and prominent government buildings.

Mr Duraisamy has also instructed the civic authorities to put up information banners in all the 200 ward offices to display the phone numbers and designation of senior and local corporation officials.

The idea is to help the public get in touch with officials regarding civic complaints, corporation sources said.

The banner will explain the corporation hierarchy and provide phone numbers starting from mayor, corporation commissioner to the local divisional junior engineer.

Talking about the corporation’s energy-saving measures, the official said the corporation plans to install LED lights in residential areas that were recently merged with the city corporation.

The corporation has been spending close to Rs 20 crore towards annual electricity bills and streetlight power consumption alone would account to 25 per cent of its total power consumption.

Chennai corporation, led by its previous mayor M. Subramanian, passed a resolution sanctioning purchase of around 2,900 sophisticated and energy-saving lights at a total cost of Rs 7.54 crore and estimated that the move will save 5,71,261 units of electricity for the civic body and Rs 30 lakh towards the monthly EB bill.

Solar lights have been in active discussion at the Ripon buildings for the past two years and the engineering departments were yet to replace the existing lights with solar structures.

The energy-saving solar and LED lamps will reduce our EB bills and, now, with the revised EB rates, there is an immediate need for power-saving measures.

Most of the new streetlights will come up at Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur areas, official sources said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
