Soldier tries to kill self after wife leaves him

A 29-year-old soldier attempted to commit suicide on Thursday by slashing his body with a razor since his wife who left him after a quarrel refused to reconcile.

Vishnu Kumar of Vellalar Street in Ayanavaram, who works in the Tambaram military training camp, had married Sulaika four years ago. The couple had frequent arguments about shifting to Kerala. Sulaika wanted to move permanently to Kerala, while Kumar refused to leave his job in Chennai.

Four months ago, after one such argument, Sulaika left Kumar and went to stay at her maternal home in Kerala. Despite repeated attempts to sort out the issue, Sulaika refused to come to Chennai.

Upset over this, Vishnu Kumar slashed his body with a razor on Thursday night. “On hearing his screams, neighbours rushed to his rescue and admitted him to the government hospital,” police said.
