Steps taken to contain dengue
Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa appealed to the people not to panic in the wake of outbreak of dengue fever in the southern districts and announced that initiatives to contain spread of the fever have been strengthened.
The chief minister said massive cleaning work would be taken up at once in the entire Tirunelveli district and also other districts in the state.
“Anti-dengue fumigation will be carried out across the state for the next two months,” said Ms Jayalalithaa who reviewed the dengue fever situation in Tirunelveli district at a high-level meeting at the secretariat here.
The government’s prompt steps helped control spread of dengue in the neighbouring districts of Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari.
So far about 1,466 persons have been hospitalised with symptoms of fever. Of them 817 have been diagnosed with dengue. While 423 out of 817 are undergoing treatment at the hospitals, the rest have been discharged.
“Measures have been put in place including deputing experts from Chennai who were involved in both treating the affected and checking the breeding of mosquitoes,” the chief minister added.
Medical camps will be organised across Tirunelveli district and those found affected will be shifted to hospitals.
To facilitate this, mobile medical teams have been deployed, she said and added that separate wards would be set up in hospitals in Tirunelveli and Tenkasi for the purpose.
Besides conducting awareness programmes in the district, drinking water will be supplied to people in Tirunelveli and Kadayanallur, where more cases have been reported, to ensure people do not store water.
Private hospitals have been instructed to conduct test for dengue and a high-level team, comprising senior health officials, is camping in Tirunelveli to take steps to control the fever.
