Steps taken to tackle rain woes: Minister
The state government had taken preventive measures to tackle the rain-related woes even before the onset of monsoon, said local administration minister K.P. Munusamy.
After inspecting the rain-hit areas in the city on Sunday, the minster told reporters, “A review meeting to this effect was held comprising corporation commissioner, senior officials of Chennai metro water and corporation engineers. Stormwater desilting works begun nearly five months ago.
Since May, the city corporation has been desilting 1,251km of the 1,400km drains in the city. In addition, desilting works in 93,761 sewers across Chennai has been completed.
As a result, inundation and sewage water mixing with rainwater has been prevented to a large extent,” he said.
The minister also said that 107 high-pressure mobile water pumps have been kept on stand by, in the event of water stagnation in the sub-ways.
