Story telling session for fishermen
Greenpeace activists along with theatre personality Eric Miller organised a story telling session with the fishermen at Light House fish market on Saturday, highlighting the need for effective fisheries management measures in the country.
Pointing out the falling fish catch, an increasingly common problem for traditional fisher communities in the country, a protest was held, featuring fishermen carrying empty fish nets and baskets as they end a day of fishing out at sea.
“These fishermen, along with 12 million people who live on our coasts are directly dependent on a healthy marine life for their food security and livelihoods,” said Satish Kumar, a Greenpeace volunteer.
“Fishing is a difficult profession today owing to unsustainable fishing methods, lack of insight into fisheries management and an apathetic attitude towards what is happening in our seas,” said a fisherman who is participating in Green Peace initiative for a fisheries management system to curb illegal fishing and revive the falling fish population.
