S. Aravindhan grew up seeing his mother, the sole bread winner, working hard as a maid and struggling to make both ends meet.

This prompted Aravindhan, the eldest of three children whose father, an alcoholic, had left them when he was very young, to use his plus-2 holidays to earn and support his mother.

Friends helped Aravindhan get a job as a painter and on the second day at work he attended nature’s call and accidentally came in contact with an electric wire and lost his right hand. He was also severely injured in his right leg.

“We are trying hard to forget the fateful day, May 10. It has been a month now since he was admitted to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital’s burns ward and it would take one more month for him to walk. His right hand was amputated and he cannot bear the pain,” said mother Chandra, trying hard to control her tears.

However, Aravindhan, who is confined to bed, is confident that he will get well soon. “I want to complete my studies and support my family,” he said.

Aravindhan could not speak much, but Chandra said his friends are supporting him. “We stay in Kakkan Nagar, Adambakkam.

He studied in Periasamy Government Higher Secondary School, Velachery, and his friends got his transfer certificate for him and have even applied in a few colleges,” said Chandra.

“He wants to do B.Sc computer science and we hope his dream will come true. I try hard to boost him by saying everything would be alright soon and we can even fix an artificial hand,” she said.

Aravindhan has secured 929 marks with 172 in computer science. His brother is in Class IX and sister works in a fancy store to support the family.

“We have spent around Rs 12,000 on injections and medicine. We are struggling for money, as I cannot go to work now. But we are hopeful that some good people will help us,” said Chandra. She can be contacted on 9841704439.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
