Students to take eco walk to save Pallikaranai
The forest department has launched a campaign among city college students to protect the Pallikaranai marsh.
Under the project, the department plans to organise interaction sessions and eco walks for college and school students.
“The students, during their visit, will be briefed about the rich flora and fauna in Pallikaranai and its neighbourhood,” said Pallikaranai range officer Vijayan.
The first batch of 40 environment students from the Meenakshi Women’s College attended the camp last week and more students and youngsters will be roped in, the ranger added.
“The chief minister is keen on restoration of the marsh and the forest officials have instructed local independent biologists and wildlife NGOs to focus on the conservation and create awareness among Chennaiites so that the marsh, after restoration, can be conserved with public participation,” says K.V.R.K Thirunaran, founder, The Nature Trust.
