Students take new path
A large number of Indian students join engineering and management programmes in US universities and colleges, but varsity administrators say that students from the country have started to look at off-beat courses such as dairy science and fine arts.
Song Hoffman, a representative from the South Dakota State University who took part in the road show organised by the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) in association with Institute of International Education in the city on Saturday, said that about 12 students from India currently studied under-graduate and post-graduate programmes in dairy science.
“We expect the numbers to grow year by year. Some of these alumni have been placed in big dairy companies in Iowa,” she said.
Jack Muir from the SCAD University said that many Indian students had enrolled for fine arts courses such as communication arts, liberal arts and digital media.
“As we offer placements at top design firms like Pixel, we get several students from India,” he said.
Renuka Raja Rao, country coordinator, Education USA, USIEF, said that every year 25,000 to 35,000 students travelled to the US for higher studies.
“At present we have 1,03,895 UG and PG students in various higher education institutions in the US. Most Indian students join engineering, liberal arts and science courses traditionally, which still continues to dominate the list,” she said.
