Suyamvaram for disabled in districts
Suyamvarams for the differently-abled are likely to become a regular feature and will be taken to their doorsteps, well almost, if a plan by the Tamil Nadu Differently Abled Welfare Association (TNDAWA) materialises. This will spare them the drudgery of visiting Chennai, it is reasoned.
“Realising the increasing difficulty of the disabled in getting married, we have organised two suyamvarams in Chennai. We have plans to organise similar events at all district headquarters soon, for the benefit of the differently-abled,” says N. Ravi, president of TNDAWA.
Speaking to this correspondent on Sunday he said the two annual events organised in the city had exposed some of the problems of the disabled.
“The thinking, that, it is difficult to settle down with a pay packet of about Rs 20,000 or less has sunk in the minds of the youngsters. This is one cause for rejection. Their expectations too are high…,” he says. A majority of those who were graduates or had studied upto Class 8 had to wait for several years to get married.
Last year, about 29 out of 232 persons who had attended the April suyamvaram tied the knot. But this time the attendance at the suyamvaram on Sunday was “not upto the expectations” of the organisers.
According to another person, this sort of events required more publicity.
“A database on the youngsters along with their requirements in selecting their better halves will help to narrow down the searches,” he suggested.
