Take online tour of heritage sites
History and heritage lovers from TN who do not have the time or resources to visit all historical monumental and heritage sites in the state would soon be able to tour these places virtually.
The state archaeological department has taken up the ambitious project of providing virtual tours to around 80 heritage sites and monuments maintained by the department.
“In the first phase, we would be providing virtual tours of 35 of these sites and the tours will be available over the next few months,” said Dr S. Vasanthi, Deputy Superintendent Archaeologist.
“The tours will also be Geographic Information System (GIS) enabled and will have all the relevant information available with the archeology department.”
Speaking to this newspaper, commissioner of museums and head of the archeology department Mr C.P. Singh said the department had decided to provide the virtual tours to encourage public to visit historic sites more often. “We hope the virtual tours will entice public to make a physical visit,” he said.
The project taken up along with Elcot at the cost of `28 lakh is expected to provide an easy platform for history lovers to peruse their favourite heritage locations. The tours will be available on the archaeological department website www.tnarch.gov.in.
