Take a virtual tour to know TN heritage

Are you a heritage buff keen on exploring the cultural heritage in Tamil Nadu? The state archaeology department’s website would be the ideal spot to obtain a bird’s eye view of the heritage wealth of the state.

In an effort to provide virtual experience to visitors and encourage them to tour the impressive spots, the archaeology department has planned to introduce virtual tour of 79 monuments, besides upgrading the website.

“The move will create adequate awareness among the people on the rich cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu, glorious traditions, its classical Tamil language, magnificent monuments, exquisite temples, art and sculpture and diversified traditions. This will attract tourists to visit monuments,” a senior official said. The monuments figuring in the virtual tour in the official website www.tnarch.gov.in are spread across the state and some are situated in remote places.

“This will provide a simulation of an existing location, composed by sequence of images with multimedia effects like sound effects, music, narration, and text,” he added. The archaeology department has entrusted Elcot with the task of identifying a competent software firm for developing virtual tour and also re-designing the website to make it more attractive.

The site, presently, is rather bookish providing exhaustive particulars on its activities and research inclination. The site’s image makeover will make it seem eye-catching, it is said. Established in 1961 to conserve the ancient monuments in the state besides take up excavations, the department’s activities also includes epigraphy, setting up site museums, undertake chemical preservation of art objects and registration of antiquities.
