Talking on phone, driver crashes into shops
A Metro Transport Corporation bus plying between Kovalam and Pallavaram rammed into three roadside shops on Thuraipakkam-Pallavaram radial road after the driver lost control of the vehicle on Monday afternoon, allegedly as he was speaking on a mobile phone.
The passengers and onlookers thrashed the driver saying that his callousness in speaking on the phone had led to the accident.
The bus, with 24 passengers, was crossing Eechangad on the radial road around 1 pm when it hit a teashop, biryani centre and a small studio.
Fortunately nobody was injured in the accident.
As soon as the bus stopped, people started pointing fingers at the driver, Xavier Anbarasu, 30, alleging that he was taking on a mobile phone.
When the people started beating up the driver, the conductor tried to rescue his colleague. This infuriated the public, who beat up the conductor also and forced the bus crew to flee.
“The driver claimed that he was not talking on the phone but was trying to overtake another vehicle when the mishap happened,” police said.
