Tension over fishing row on TN-Andhra border
Disputes over fishing territories between two fishing hamlets at the Andhra Pradesh-Tamil Nadu border have been giving sleepless nights to police of both states for the last four days.
The quarrel between the residents of Karur and Nochhukuppam villages, situated in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu respectively, has become a serious issue and the situation is quite tense. In this backdrop, both states have deployed a large contingent of police to prevent any untoward incidents.
Thiruvallur SP Roopesh Kumar Yadav and Nellore SP B.V. Ramana Kumar discussed the law and order situation on Monday. Till date, efforts of the senior police officers of both the states to settle the row have failed to yield any results and the locals continue to remain stubborn.
The situation had become tense last Wednesday after locals of Nochhikuppam had allegedly assaulted one Mr Jeeva of Karur when he had gone to a hospital in Arambakkam, a town close to Tada in AP. The problem escalated after Nochhukuppam residents allegedly abducted two persons from Karur after the incident.
Though the Karur residents had alleged that the Arambakkam police had not registered cases against the attackers, the Tada police has registered cases against the people of Nochhukuppam.
Locals of Karur are staying away from Arambakkam where they do most of their businesses. At least 75 per cent of children from Karur study in schools at Arambakkam but parents are not sending them to school since the last four days fearing attacks.
Meanwhile police on the Andhra side had prevented a 500 strong mob from Karur from attacking the Nochhukuppam colony two days back.
