Three cars, 3 bikes go up in flames

Three cars and three bikes went up in flames in a mysterious fire reported in the parking area of an apartment complex on AVM Avenue in Virugambakkam on Thursday night.

The fire was noticed at around 2 am by Ramya, wife of chartered accountant Venkitesan. The family immediately alerted their neighbours about the fire who all came down at once. Sensing the grave situation, the fire control room was told about the fire and fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

The families of Venkitesan, Narayanan, Ponnuseamy and Sivaraman were staying in the complex. Because of the intensity of the blazing vehicles, a pillow and a part of bed were damaged in the fire in one of the apartments.

Though initially it was believed the fire was the result of short circuit in one of the air conditioners, police concluded that the fire may not have resulted from a short circuit as the power supply did not fail in the building.

The inmates believe the fire started from one of the vehicles. “It is not clear if somebody had set a vehicle on fire or a vehicle caught fire because of a short circuit in the battery,” the police said.
