Three to get Green chariot awards from governor

The prestigious Green Chariot Awards for environment protection will be awarded by the Rotary Club of Madras Southwest at a function at the Raj Bhavan on Tuesday.

Instituted in 2010, the awards are in their third year and will be presented by Governor K. Rosaiah at 6 pm. This year, the platinum award will be given to Mr R. Elango from Kuthambakkam for transforming his village into an eco-friendly hamlet.

The gold award will be conferred upon Dr Uma Devi and Mr U.V. Krishna Mohan Rao, owners of the first platinum-rated green home in India. The silver award will be given to Mainetti India P Ltd, Sriperumbudur, the first platinum-rated green factory in the country, said Mr P.V.R. Krishna Rao of the club.

Mr Elango was the Panchayat president of the 5000 strong village of Kuthambakkam. The village had been fraught with poverty and lacked basic infrastructure and violence against lower castes and women was rampant.

Today the village has infrastructure and the locals are now comfortable with an environment-friendly local economy based on a cooperative model producing basic necessities like food and clothing within the village itself.

The second recipients, Dr Uma Devi and Mr U.V. Krishna Mohan Rao of Madipakkam, believe that conservation starts from one’s home and lifestyle. Their daughter Ms Nivedita is perhaps the first medical professional in India to have qualified from the US Green Building Certification Institute.

Silver award winner, Mainett India Pvt Ltd, manufactures hangers for apparel companies all over the world. They have set up their green factory in Sriperumbudur. The building has been designed, conceptualised and built on green values.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
