Ticket-issuing machines, 3,000 new buses for state
The state government has decided to buy 3,000 new buses during the financial year 2012-13. With this, the fleet strength of the state-owned transport corporations would cross the 25,000 mark.
Further, it has been decided to introduce hand-held ticket issuing devices in all buses of state transport corporations (STUs). The government will also provide financial support to release all 219 buses under attachment by courts owing to non-payment of compensation to affected parties.
Finance minister O.Panneerselvam announced that the government would purchase another 3,000 buses during the financial year at an estimated cost of Rs 548 crore.
Mr Panneerselvam said, “After the government assumed office, sanction was accorded for purchasing 3,000 new buses for STUs.
In a bid to maintain and improve the present level of operations and also to improve the present level of operations and also to augment services on need basis, another 3,000 buses will be purchased during this fiscal.”
He added the existing infrastructure for bus building with STUs would be fully utilized by synchronizing the purchase of buses.
