Tipplers ruin trekkers’ hotspot
Ubbalamadugu falls in Varadaiahpalem, a famous trekking spot on the Andhra Pradesh-Tamil Nadu border, has become a drunkard’s hub.
Lack of patrolling and surveillance in the area commonly referred to as Tada forest, are the main reasons for this grim situation.
Forest rangers and security guards near the checkposts, when asked, claimed ignorance about the issue.
Seeking anonymity, one of the security guards said, “Though we are short-staffed, we are doing our best. But, it is not possible to keep a check on every tourist.”
They claim that the route between two checkpoints is where the locals sell alcohol to the tourists. It was also found that security check inside the forest is non-existent or, at best, minimal.
District forest officer of Chittoor, Mr Chakrapani, said, “We got information on the use of alcohol only yesterday.
We have formed a team to conduct searches. We have warned the locals that those who violate the law will be treated accordingly. We are also planning to clean the area this week.”
Trekker R. Ashokan said poignantly, “I came here all the way from Chennai to enjoy the natural surroundings.
But, I am saddened to see what is happening here: people drink, cook and throw the garbage wherever they please.
Smashed liquor bottles can be found all over the forest. Officials say that they are taking measures to prevent the pollution, but nothing happens in reality.”
Trekkers allege that groups of youngsters flock to the place only to consume alcohol and not to appreciate Nature.
The famous trekking spot is under the Chittoor district collectorate but the collector was not available for comment despite repeated calls.
