TN gives data on temples
The Tamil Nadu government on Monday informed the Madras high court that it had collected data relating to temple properties in eight districts and the data of two districts had been forwarded to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR & CE) department.
A PIL by the International Sri Vaishnava Dharma Sumraksahna Society through its president, Swamy Govinda Rmananujadas of Nungambakkam, contended that though temples were endowed with valuable property and land, most temples in the state were unable to hold even one puja daily.
The revenue department which was in possession of the land records must pass on the details to the HR & CE department for necessary action, the petitioner said.
The petition sought a direction to the authorities to carry out the work mentioned in the November 23, 2009, G.O.
The GO directed the principal secretary/commissioner of survey and settlement to send the CDs by scanning details of land and other property belonging to Hindu Religious temples coming under the HR & CE and directed that comprehensive steps be taken to collect details from the departments of archives, collectorates concerned and inform the approximate expenditure to be incurred for this.
The commissioner in his counter said eight districts have complied with the G.O and the CDs submitted by Tiruvarur and Tirunelveli had already been forwarded to the HR & CE for action.
Following a plea to grant more time to collect data for other districts, a division bench of Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam granted four months to the authorities to compile the data and send them to HR & CE department for action.
