TN goes to West Bengal for rice

With the prices of rice and gram skyrocketing, chief minister J. Jayalalithaa has decided to procure rice from West Bengal and supply it through the public distribution system outlets at a subsidised rate of Rs25 per kilo. Gram will also be subsidised.

The price of rice registered an increase in the open market as the kuruvai crop cultivation in Tamil Nadu was hit owing to neighbouring Karnataka declining to release Cauvery water due to the state as per the interim order of the Cauvery River Authority.

Blaming the UPA government’s economic policies for the spiralling prices, Ms Jayalalithaa said her government would provide urad dal, gram dal and palm oil at subsidised rates for the next six months.

“As the prices of essential items had skyrocketed due to the economic policies of the Centre, ration cardholders will continue to get these three commodities at subsidised rates for another six months from October 1,” said Ms Jayalalithaa who reviewed the price situation with senior ministers and officials.

This will entail expenditure of Rs907.8 crore for the exchequer.
