TNHB flat balcony falls, kills 1

A 55-year-old woman was killed when the balcony of the second floor in the TNHB Colony at Manali New Town where she lived collapsed on Thursday morning.

Nayagammal, the wife of Moorthy, was standing on the ground floor and talking to her neighbours, when balcony of the second floor flat collapsed on her, killing her on the spot.

Three other residents, Chitra and her two daughters aged 9 and 5, were injured in the incident and were admitted to hospital.

The building in the TNHB Colony at Manali New Town is in a very bad condition, according to police. “There are cracks in some flats.

Many of the balconies and extended structures are damaged and can fall down at any time,” said a police officer who visited the colony immediately after the accident.

The police also indicated that the authorities had already asked residents to vacate the flats, saying that the building was not suitable for residing. Many residents are owners while the others are staying on rent, the police noted.
