Undone flyover hits Porur traffic
Traffic congestion at the Porur junction continues to be a nightmare for commuters as the flyover remains incomplete.
The flyover, construction of which stopped about a year ago, is proving to be a major cause of traffic jams, especially during peak hours.
Mr Senthil R., who uses the road on his way to work, says, “It takes almost an hour to get past the junction. A flyover would go a long way in reducing congestion, but right now the construction site only serves to exacerbate the problem.”
Traffic policemen stationed at the junction agree. “During peak hours, traffic backs up all the way to Aiyappanthaangal, resulting in 3 km-long jams.
And it doesn’t help that the flyover hasn’t been completed. The construction site sits in middle of the road and makes it very hard for traffic to move along,” one of them said.
He added that the junction was also an accident prone with major accidents occurring almost every week.
“Pedestrians do not cross the road at the zebra crossing because of the slow-moving traffic. Some of them get hurt inevitably.”
Residents say that construction work on the flyover stopped almost a year back. Mr Basha, who runs a tea stall opposite the site, said, “Construction on the bridge proceeded on and off for two years and finally stopped completely last year. Structures adjoining the road were demolished about nine months back but work hasn’t resumed yet.”
When contacted, a senior State Highways Department official said that the construction had not proceeded because of underground Metro Water lines.
“Those lines have to be re-routed before work on the flyover can proceed. We are waiting for completion of the Metro Water work after which construction on the flyover will resume early next year.”
