Zoo’s new snake house now open for viewing
As a measure to woo visitors, the Arignar Anna Zoological Park has constructed a non-venomous snake house at a cost of Rs 4 lakh.
The snake house will help the visitors to look at ten varieties of snakes at close quarters.
A press release from the zoo said that the idea behind the snake house is to help the visitors to identify the differences between the different types of non-venomous snakes.
Barring python all the other non poisonous snakes will be released into the house and a green net will be placed above the house to ensure that the relative temperature of the house in regulated and humidity is not felt by the reptiles.
The snake house has been designed with natural ventilation and will glass windows enabling the visitors to have a full view of the wild inmates; the release said adding the snake house will accommodate water snakes, green snakes and two types of sand boas.
According to zoo sources, besides the Snake house, the zoo also houses a reptile house in which venomous snakes like King Cobra, Cobra, Krait, Viper and Russell vipers are kept.
It may be noted that the Vandalur zoo continues to be a successful breeding centre for the critically endangered Indian Rock and Reticulate pythons.
