Junior chess champs ready to battle it out

The State Junior Chess Championship will be organised at Hotel Royal Palace in Kozhikode from May 11 to 13.

“All the arrangements have been made to host the event in the district. About 100 players will vie with each other and every district will have a minimum representation of four players.

The tournament was held in the district three years ago,’’ says P. Venugopal, general secretary of the Chess Association of Kerala.

“This will be a good experience for the players. Those who win the tournament will be eligible to play the in the National Junior Chess Championship to be held in Rajasthan in September,” he says. The championship will be for the under-19 age category.

Several major players in the age category including S.L. Narayanan, Bhagya Jayesh, Anjana Krishna, Arjun Satheesh and K. Arjun will vie with each other in the competition.

Last year, K. Arjun emerged the winner in the championship held in Kottayam. However, this year prodigy S.L. Narayanan, who lost the State senior championship — held in Kochi recently, by a whisker will be a hot contestant.

“S.L. Narayanan, who had participated in his first foreign tournament earlier this year and performed well in the senior championship, will be the top seed in the championship. However, the picture will be clear by Friday morning,” says Venugopal.

“The tournament will be one of the major ones in the district. Apart from the open Fide-rated tournaments, this will witness more enthusiastic games as this is a platform for young players to take part in the national level competitions. By playing in these championships we hope more new talent is unearthed from the state,” he said.

Kozhikode has hosted the championship several times and this is the sixth championship being organised in the state by the Chess Association of Kerala.

“The games will be held in both the girls and boys section. We are happy to conduct a state-level tournament here and would like to see the city rise to its past glory,” said Venugopal.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
