With two experienced grandmasters all set for their championship match from Friday, India’s golden girl GM Koneru Humpy spoke to Deccan Chronicle about how Viswanathan Anand is a favourite to retain the title.

“In the last two instances, Anand played against younger opponents, but now, he will be meeting Boris Gelfand, who is an year older than him, I expect an exciting series,” said Humpy adding that Anand’s match experience might prove decisive.

Noting that importance of preparation, Humpy said, the players would obviously be feeling tensed, as they will be playing a prestigious title match.

However, she noted that Anand is known for his excellent preparation, which was witnessed during his match against Topolov. “We are waiting to see a few surprises and from him including additions to his seconds team this time,” she added.

Recalling her experience of playing Hou Yifan of China in the last year’s women’s title match, Humpy noted that such duels sap one’s energy. “You need to target not only your opponent’s weaknesses, but also rectify your own,” she added.

The only Indian woman to play for the world title, Humpy noted that a relaxed approach and keen eye to look for opportunities as clinching factors in long matches.

“It is easier said than done,” added Humpy.

Opening preparation is crucial in any duel but a player should not stick on to his original plans throughout the contest according to Humpy. “Depending on the outcome of the game and opponent’s play, one needs to change and be flexible during matches,” she added.

On Anand’s strengths, Humpy noted that he is strong in utilising even a small opportunity. “He doesn’t miss even the slightest of chances. It is his biggest technical strength,” she added.

Further, she noted that the Indian genius’s estimation of opponents is high. “He will go for a simple and easy draw, if the opponent is very strong on that particular day. He is very smart on that context.

He will not try to prove his mastery over the opponent on such occasions,” said Humpy who added that Anand’s single minded devotion to the game and support of his family have been the main reasons for his continued success.

(Viswanathan Anand will be playing Israeli GM Boris Gelfand at Moscow from May 11 for his fifth world title).

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
