Bihar, J’khand oppose action against Maoists
Kolkata, Feb. 5: Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s proposal for joint operation against the Maoists has not found favours with his counterparts in neighbouring Bihar and Jharkhand. Significantly, days before the meeting between the chief ministers of
West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa with Union home minister P. Chidambaram on February 9, Bihar and Jharkhand hinted that they did not support the idea of launching any joint operation. Instead, they have given stress on a "holistic approach" like implementing the developmental programmes to counter the Maoist menace.
In a meeting between the top officials of these four states on Friday in Kolkata, the chief secretary of Bihar and the home secretary of Jharkhand said that the "bullet against bullet" could not solve this menace. "We should give more stress on developmental issues in the Maoist-affected areas," a source said, quoting the officials in the meeting.
