BJP ‘eco-friendly’ meet Feb. 17

New Delhi, Jan. 27: The BJP, which many feel had lost its identity of “party with a difference” in the recent times, is planning to do something different for its forthcoming national executive and national council meetings. Call it its austerity drive or genuine concern for the deteriorating environment, the three-day-long meet in Indore has been termed as an “eco-friendly” meet by the saffron outfit. The meet will begin on February 17.

After asking its leaders to live in tents during the three-day long meet, the event will see the BJP leaders and party cadre riding bicycles, eating on banana leaves and using only eco-friendly jute bags. Participants would also be provided with recycled papers during the meet.
Though some senior leaders had raised concerns after the idea of tents as accommodation during the meet was mooted by the party chief Nitin Gadkari, the idea of eco-friendly national council and national executive meetings has been appreciated by everyone. The idea was mooted by a senior Madhya Pradesh BJP leader.
The party claims that it is also planning to ply only battery-run vehicles to ferry its leaders and avoid furniture made out of plastic, instead carpets would be used for the sitting arrangements.
A senior party functionary said the BJP was very vocal against the UPA government for its stand on the climate change issue and was also mentioned in its manifesto for the Lok Sabha polls.
“Now is the time to prove that we really care for the environment. It was a very good idea and we all liked it. There would be more than 3,000 partymen attending the meet and by doing this we just want to bring down the affects on the environment which such large gathering have by cutting down things that damage the environment. I will be riding a bicycle after many years but it would definitely be a fun,” said the senior party functionary.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
