Churchill win derby, rise to second spot
Margao, Feb. 1: Churchill Brothers returned to winning ways as they secured a 2-1 win over fellow Goans Salgaocar in their I-League Round 13 match here on Monday.
Tim Hankinson’s men took an early lead through Mandjou Keita, but the champions scored goals through Gouramangi Singh (42nd minute) and Odafe Okolie (89th) to move to 2nd in the league standings with 22 points from 13 matches, one behind leaders Dempo who have a game in hand.
Dempo look to
maintain lead
Leaders Dempo will take on Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan at the Nehru Stadium at Fatorda on Tuesday.
In their last match the Goans had split the points against East Bengal. "We have to make up for our previous outing. We did not play bad in the last match but couldn’t score. Our opponents lost their last match, so it’s natural that they’ll come hard at us but we have to be prepared for that," Dempo coach Armando Colaco said. "The team have shown tremendous spirit in maintaining a good run in the previous matches and since we’re coming to a crucial stage of the league it will be very useful to end up with a win," Colaco added.
Dempo have a couple of worries with winger Clifford Miranda and defender Samir Naik doubtful starters. Brazilian medio Beto and Nigerian striker Ranty Martins are still to recover form injury.
