CWG must have top stars, says Vijender
Mumbai, Feb. 5: Fresh from his silver-medal winning performance at the invitational Champion of Champions boxing tournament in China, Olympic bronze medalist Vijender Singh feels that the sheen of the Commonwealth Games will be lost if big names back out from the event.
"I think that the reputation of India is at stake if top athletes boycott the Commonwealth Games due to security issues. India ki naak kat na jaye," he said.
Commenting on the World Series Boxing tournament, he said, "The coming of the league could open more avenues for boxers. Today’s youth is more aggressive and boxing could be an option to divert their energies."
He was not happy with the way sportsperson in the country were treated or the fact that money released for the development of sportspersons never reached them.
"There is not much of a change in our diet or training. We have been doing the same things that we did three years back. And also the money that is granted against our names never reaches us.
"We need to move forward and match international standards if we want to achieve what we promise," Vijender added.
